Herein, why f1 car Tyres are smooth?
So the FIA decided to re-introduce slick tires, as well as regulate aerodynamics, in order to reduce the dependency on aerodynamic grip, while increasing mechanical grip. This would help in increasing wheel-to-wheel racing, and make races more exciting.
Also, why are tires not smooth? Smooth tyre can not provide sufficient road grip on watery surface. As there is no tread grooves, so contact area increases at contact patch and it generates more tractive force, more braking fore, more cornering force. But smooth tyre is fatal for wet road. Racing tyre has no tread on it for this reason.
Thereof, why do racing car needs smooth TYRE and bicycle need a well grooved TYRE?
The simple answer is that in dry conditions 'slick' tyres without tread give better performance. You have more rubber in contact with the track surface and the tread block is more mechanically stable. The only reason that road tyres have a grooved tread pattern is to disperse water and reduce the risk of aquaplaning.
Why do race cars have wide tires?
Grip. The wider the tyre the more rubber is in contact with the road, therefore more grip. Grip is critical for applying power to the road, cornering and braking.
